Metal Detecting

Our first Metal detecting event following the lockdown situations and was held in the Weyhill area to the west of Andover on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday the 18th and 19th of September. This attracted around 150 detectorists over the weekend.

Anton Rotary Club are becoming well known throughout the detectorising fraternity and we are delighted to see the familiar faces arriving at each event. Details are normally released through the metal detecting forums and channels as well as word of mouth between friends.This event followed our normal pattern where we arrive a couple of days before to erect the tents and gazebos, check that the mobile toilets have been delivered and plan the catering. As the events usually allow for overnight camping, we check the campsite and arrange the fields and access. We then comfirm the details for providing breakfast for the campers.

Once all that is done we are ready to welcome all our friends to the event.

This year our friends have left some very nice messages on their forumn, a few of them are quoted here;

'Thank you for organising another brilliant rally. I had a really nice day wandering around, meeting new people and seeing the finds. I only went for the Saturday and made finds in each of the 4 fields.
My finds of note were;
1697 William 3rd shilling, 1850 Victoria sixpence, 1702 Anne Expedition to Vigo Bay token, Post Medieval book clasp, George 4th penny, 1862 Victoria half penny, Buttons, buckles, bullet and a nice piece of gold looking glass which is green when you hold it up to the light.'

'Thanks again Mike and to all of your fellow Rotarians'

'Another great weekend rally over for another year, thanks to Mike and all his fellow Rotarians for their hard work and giving up their weekend to make it all happen. It was nice to meet up with some old and new people. Found a couple of hammies, a roman nail cleaner and a grot among other things so well pleased. Plenty of finds came out so most people were happy once again and Mike booked some lovely weather for us. Looking forwarrd to next years already.
Thanks again Mike.'

'
Just to add my thanks to Tony, Mike et al for the perfect organisation and to the Gods for Saturday's perfect weather. I had to retire early on Saturday due to a hip problem but nevertheless an enjoyable day, meeting a couple of old faces. No major finds for me but a couple of Viccie and George 111 penies, bag seals, buttons and the obligatory musket balls. Good to see many excellent finds coming up through from various eras - looing forward to seeing the Powepoint presentation.
My best find since getting home was the history of the weyhill Fair - well known no doubt to the organisers but an interestin read nevertheless.
I hope the event raised a significant amount for the chosen charities.'.

We thank all the detectorists for their comments and look forward to welcoming them all back in 2022.
